The Community Foundation of Greater Flint is pleased to welcome two talented interns to our team this summer: Malaysia Baker and Angel Maldonado.

From donor engagement to digital storytelling, both interns will contribute to meaningful projects that support our mission and community. Learn more about them below!

Story by Angel Maldonado, Communications Intern.

Malaysia Baker, Development Intern

Malaysia Baker is a senior at the University of Michigan-Flint studying Sociology and is set to graduate this December. As the Development Intern, she is working closely with the Development team on community projects that support the Genesee County community.

Malaysia was drawn to the internship due to her desire to give back to the community where she was raised. She is deeply passionate about social issues such as minority advocacy, child development, food assistance, and housing, recognizing the impact these challenges have on Flint and other communities nationwide.

“I want to help the community that I have grown up in for so long. I see and even understand the strife that the Flint community has gone through over time, and I would like to build connections with donors and other organizations that would result in the Flint community benefiting in the long run,” Malaysia shared.

This summer, she hopes to improve her leadership and communication skills.

“I want to go out on my own and develop the networking skills necessary to bring people together that would result in meaningful change,” Malaysia said.

Malaysia also has interests in issues that not only have an impact on Flint, but also nationwide.

After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in non-profit work in Dallas, TX. In her spare time, she likes reading, listening to music, taking walks with her dog, and cooking.

Angel Maldonado, Communications Intern

Angel Maldonado is a recent graduate from the University of Michigan-Flint, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies. Angel is serving as the Communications Intern, where she will be working on projects which include writing feature articles, designing graphics, creating social media content, assisting with events, and supporting community engagement initiatives.

When asked why she applied to the internship, she shared, “I admire that CFGF is committed to making a positive impact in the community.”

Angel developed a strong interest in communications and marketing far before attending college. She has always admired producing content, editing videos, and coming up with creative ways to engage with others online.

“Creativity has always been a big part of who I am. Since an early age, I have always found joy in creating and editing videos, and bringing ideas to life through digital content. Over time, those experiences inspired my passion in communications and marketing, which ultimately led me to pursue this career path," Angel said.

Through this experience, she looks forward to learning from professionals in her field, and gaining valuable insight of how storytelling and outreach can enhance connections within the community. She is thrilled about the opportunity to share stories that showcase CFGF’s efforts and its influence across greater Flint.

Following the internship, Angel is determined to continue building her career in communications, ideally working in social media marketing, advertising, or even public relations.

Outside of work, she enjoys staying active, exploring coffee shops, spending time with her dog, and keeping up with the latest social media trends.

In addition to spending their summer interning at CFGF, Malaysia and Angel are participating in the Flinterns program, which provides college students and recent graduates the opportunity to build professional connections throughout the Flint community and develop the skills that will prepare them for their future careers.
