Who We Are

Genesee County students have what it takes. Education is one of the most direct routes to financial stability and better health, and the data tells a clear story, residents in Flint without a high school diploma face a 40% poverty rate, compared to 11.6% for those who earn a bachelor's degree.
The path to a degree has real barriers at every stage. Young people growing up in low-income household's face challenges to school readiness long before they enter kindergarten. Many families can't absorb the cost of college. Students who do enroll often need more than acceptance to finish.
The Community Foundation of Greater Flint invests in education from birth through post-secondary completion, because every student in Genesee County deserves a genuine chance at building the future they're working toward.
Theory of Impact: We strive to strengthen the quality of education along the continuum from birth through post-secondary enrollment and completion.
How we're investing in Quality Education:
Since 2016, the Flint Kids Fund has invested over $16 million in programs aimed to address and mitigate the impact of lead poisoning and trauma suffered by many children in Flint.
The Flint Promise Scholarship Program offers Flint graduates a guided pathway to helping students achieve completing post-secondary education. A path filled with light, hope, and the promise of support when the day-to-day struggles of studying, basic needs, and health issues become barriers to success. This is the promise we make to Flint scholars — you can earn a college education.
The majority of our scholarships use an online application that allows you to submit one application for all of the scholarships for which you are eligible. Note that some scholarships have a different application process. View the list of scholarships offered and how to apply.
The Community Foundation of Greater Flint’s Youth Advisory Committees (Clio, Countywide, Grand Blanc, and South Lakes) are groups of students from local high schools who are responsible for reviewing funding requests and recommending grants for programs that benefit Genesee County youth.
