On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the history and culture of Indigenous communities. It’s also a time to reflect on how we can each play a role in truth, healing, and allyship in Genesee County.

Visit the Sloan Museum of Discovery

Explore the History Gallery at Sloan Museum of Discovery, where you can learn about the Anishinabek People, the first to live in what is now Michigan. With guidance and support from the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways, the exhibit brings history to life. It features artifacts, stories, and highlights the important contributions of Indigenous people.

Learn Whose Land You’re On

Take time to research which Indigenous nations originally inhabited the Flint area. The Anishinabek, including the Ojibwe (Chippewa), Odawa (Ottawa), and Potawatomi peoples, have deep ancestral ties to this land. Online resources like Native Land Digital can help you learn more about the territories, languages, and treaties connected to your community.

Share What You Learn

Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools for allyship. Share what you learn about Indigenous history and culture with friends, family, and coworkers. Consider highlighting Indigenous artists, educators, and leaders on social media, or attending an event honoring Indigenous communities.

Engage in Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation

The Community Foundation of Greater Flint is committed to Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT)—a community-based process designed to address the historic and contemporary effects of racism and to build equitable systems for the future. Honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day is one way to live out that commitment by recognizing truth, fostering understanding, and creating space for belonging.

At the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, we know that acknowledging our shared history is part of creating a vibrant and equitable future. As we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we invite you to join us in learning, connecting, and giving in ways that honor Indigenous resilience and wisdom.
