Dr. Michael Giacalone, Jr., M.D. is the 2025 recipient of the Dr. Clement A. Alfred Humanitarian Award, honoring his lifelong dedication to compassionate care and service to the Flint community.
“I knew Clement Alfred very well, and to receive this from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint is such an honor. I’m very humbled to receive this award,” Dr. Giacalone says.
Born and raised in Flint, Dr. Giacalone graduated as valedictorian of Flint Central High School in 1964 and went on to earn his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Michigan. He completed his postdoctoral training at Hurley Medical Center and the University of Michigan Medical Center, followed by service as a Commander in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps.
Since 2005, Dr. Giacalone has served as Chief Medical Officer at Hamilton Community Health Network, which provides high-quality care to 23,000 patients. Under his leadership, Hamilton established a long-standing partnership with University of Michigan Health to offer specialty clinics—including urology and women’s health—ensuring access to services regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.

Dr. Giacalone is also a passionate educator, mentoring third-year medical students from the University of Michigan and supporting training programs for nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
"I always had this wonderful thought that I’d like to be of service to Flint and practice in this community. I stayed here because I loved it, and I love the people we care for,” shares Dr. Giacalone. “Being able to give individuals the kind of care that they’re entitled to is an absolute blessing.”
