When Rick McCombs established the McCombs Family Flint Funds at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint (CFGF), he wanted to ensure his love for Flint and his commitment to giving back would continue for generations.
By naming his daughter and son-in-law as successor advisors, Rick turned his Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) into a lasting family tradition of philanthropy.
Over the past year, the funds have invested in organizations including the Clingman Foundation, the Miracle League of Greater Flint, the Michigan Organization on Adolescent Sexual Health, and Motherly Intercession, strengthening local efforts that advance equity and opportunity across Genesee County.

For Rick, the most rewarding part of having a DAF is staying closely connected to the people behind the work.
“I view the community foundation as a grassroots organization that has one-on-one interactions with people who will receive the grant,” Rick says. “I have never made a grant that has not been a product of interaction and analysis before the grant has been decided upon.”
In honor of DAF Day, here are five things to know about donor advised funds, and why they’ve become one of the most meaningful ways to give back.
1. A DAF is like your personal giving account.
A donor advised fund works like a charitable savings account. You make a gift to your fund, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants to nonprofits over time. It’s a simple, flexible way to give strategically throughout the year.
2. You can open one right here at CFGF.
When you open a DAF through the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, you join a community of local donors working together for a vibrant and equitable Genesee County. CFGF handles the administration, investments, and recordkeeping, so you can focus on what matters most—creating impact.
3. You can give to causes close to home or across the country.
Your DAF gives you the freedom to support nonprofits anywhere, from a local youth program in Flint to a national health organization. CFGF ensures your gifts go to verified nonprofits, helping you give confidently and effectively.
4. DAFs make giving a family tradition.
A DAF is a great way to bring multiple generations into philanthropy. Families often involve children or grandchildren in choosing which causes to support, sparking meaningful conversations about generosity, community, and legacy.
5. You can start small and grow your giving.
You don’t have to be a millionaire to start a donor advised fund. At CFGF, you can open a fund that fits your budget and build on it over time. Gifts can include cash, stock, or other assets and CFGF’s team will guide you through every step.
