Duane and Karen Church Literacy Fund

Karen Church is a leader and believer. She believes everyone should have an opportunity to learn and earn a living wage.

As CEO of Elga Credit Union, Karen takes pride in developing new leaders, mentoring, coaching, and leading by example. She devotes over 50 hours of volunteer time to support community events each year; and also serves on the Flint Women and Girls Fund Advisory Committee.

When Karen and her husband, Duane, decided to establish a charitable fund, they wanted to focus on literacy because "we know that our community commerce will grow when every citizen is educated," said Karen. Grants from the Duane and Karen Church Literacy Fund will provide support for literacy programs, initiatives and organizations in Genesee County.

Both Karen and Duane said their mothers inspired their charitable values, stating they were always willing to give whatever they had to provide help and happiness to those in need.

"We would love to see a robust community where our young citizens want to live and raise families," Karen said. "We have always known it's important to give back. Coming from large entrepreneurial families taught us early on that the more you give, the more you receive. There's such joy in seeing how your contribution has helped someone else."
