Providing Opportunities for Children

Love is a word typically attributed to affection for another person, and this describes the late Dr. Sandra Urquhart Brown. Donald Brown first met Sandra in college at Dillard University. The couple met at the annual Sadie Hawkins when she asked him to dance.

From that moment it was meant to be; he majored in sociology and his soulmate majored in one of her greatest passions, music.

Following college, Mrs. Brown attended University of Michigan where she graduated with both her Masters and Ph.D. in education. Dr. Sandra Urquhart Brown was dedicated to education and most importantly, children. She served as a Flint school teacher and assistant dean of admissions at Mott Community College. While tutoring students, she saw that kids were not as developed as they should be so she returned to public schools to become a principal. She wished all the children in the school system would have opportunities and she loved to give them all the attention they deserved.

Sandra’s dedication to music stayed with her throughout her lifetime. She was a minister of music at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Ebenezer Ministries, and Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church. She was the founder of the Music in the Park program and Holiday Pops at the Whiting.

The Fund was created by her husband, Donald Brown. He was encouraged by his dear friend Larry Moon, a former Community Foundation trustee, to create the Fund to honor her memory. Family and friends of the family have given in her honor to support her husband in establishing her memory. Grants from the Fund will support music or education programs for students in Flint and Beecher. The love that reached individuals during her career is still continuing on after her passing.
