Serving and Leading By Example

Don and Cindy Gansen love seeing their family values in action through the lens of their five children and grandchildren. The couple has been giving back to the Flushing community for years through their time, talent and treasure. Leading by example-having their children see them involved in community affairs-set a good example and showed how that service makes a difference. And when they see their adult children now pay it forward, that's what really matters.

Both Don and Cindy have served as volunteers on the Flushing Area Community Fund Advisory Committee. Through that service they learned more about community needs and enjoyed advising grants in a variety of areas-parks and recreation, schools, and basic human needs. That's what nthey like most about the Fund-its impact on many local organizations-helping all age groups, from children to senior citizens.

"Flushing is a close-knit community. It's a community if someone needs help, there's always someone to garner support from others to assist," says Don.

"The schools and civic groups drive the tone of the community, making sure it is inviting to others," says Cindy. "The schools are very proactive and that encourages young families to consider Flushing." The Gansens were both raised in Genesee County and are now semi-retired, enjoying their flexible schedule, consulting gigs and spending time together. They hope others will follow in their footsteps, contributing to the place they love and making it better for all.
