Art came to Flint in 1916, the son of Julius (Yudke) and Rose Hurand. His father founded the Flint Baking Company in 1928, which later became the Buttercup Bakery and Do-Boy Donuts. Art attended the University of Michigan, received a law degree from Wayne State University, but never practiced law. Instead, he worked in the family business and became a deal broker who collaborated with many partners in various business ventures.
Art met his wife, Bess, during a dance. The young couple married and raised six children in Flint's Cultural Center neighborhood-Lynne, Gary, Robert, David, Sally and Jeffrey.
Over the decades, two generations of Hurands have been taking action to make our community "better and better," one of Art's favorite sayings. Art's service on the Community Foundation Board of Trustees made the Community Foundation better and better, particularly in its early years when he chaired the first fund development committee. The Hurand Family established an endowed fund to benefit the Longway Planetarium, and has given through the Community Foundation to various causes. And their gifts have included service, with Carol Hurand, wife of Gary, currently serving on the Flint Women and Girls Fund Advisory Committee.
Lynne recalls, "My dad used to say it's easy to sit up and take notice. You need to sit up and take action."
Gary says, "We live by my dad's rules and words-integrity, enthusiasm and community. "We are so honored to be recognized with the Piper Family Philanthropy Award. The Pipers have done so much for our community."
