Donors have responded to the call for matching gifts to the Flint Child Health and Development Fund of the Foundation for Flint. The Fund, established in 2016, serves the long-term health and development needs of Flint children exposed to lead in their drinking water.
The $100,000 matching gift opportunity from the Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation, Inc. was announced on National Child Health Day in October 2017. From October through December 2017, $119,082 in matching gifts were received from 390 donors. On one day alone, Flint Kids Giving Twosday, $19,688 was raised from 241 donors.
"We are grateful to Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation for encouraging new donors to give to the Flint Child Health and Development Fund by matching gifts," said Isaiah Oliver, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. "The Fund provides grants to nonprofit organizations for interventions that help Flint children overcome the effects of lead exposure."
It is estimated that more than 10,000 Flint children ages 0-6 were exposed to lead when the contaminated water flowed through the City of Flint's water system beginning in April 2014.
"The Foundation supports nonprofit organizations determined to better the healthcare community and we are happy to help the Flint Kids Fund reach those objectives," said Dr. Brenda Richardson, chair of the board for Coverys. "Our goal to support the Flint Kids Fund with our contribution and the promotion around Giving Twosday was a perfect chance to do just that."
