$30,000 Grant Addresses Gender Achievement Gap

In recognition of the 30th anniversary of the Flint Women and Girls Fund, a $30,000 grant was recently awarded to the My Sister's Keeper Mentoring Program of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint. The project will focus on providing 20 girls, ages 9-14, with STEM learning and mentoring.

"My Sister's Keeper Mentoring Program will improve academic, social and economic outcomes for young girls," said Reta Stanley, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint. "We will match 20 girls with influential women who will empower them to become self-sufficient, civic-minded individuals."

Mentors will encourage the girls to view post secondary education options as realistic. They will help mentees explore career pathways in STEM fields-science, technology, engineering and math. Improving academic outcomes will create greater opportunities for girls to earn a higher wage and increase their career options.

"Young girls will be given the opportunity to reach their fullest potential," said Stanley. "The exposure to successful women, both economically and socially, coupled with the exploration in STEM fields of study will serve as a catalyst."

The organization has been serving Genesee County youth for over 71 years with high quality, one-on-one mentoring programs. Their service model provides research-based, outcomes-driven results following best practices in mentoring
