About FIM:
Celebrating over a hundred years of service to the community, Flint Institute of Music (FIM) is a multi-disciplinary performing arts organization transforming people and community through the power of the performing arts. Together FIM programs reach more than 300,000 people annually through lessons, classes, outreach programs, performances, and concerts.
FIM offers a wide array of performances through its artistic division which includes the Flint Symphony Orchestra, Flint Repertory Theatre, FIM presenting series at Whiting Auditorium, Capitol Concerts and Capitol Movies. In addition, FIM provides extensive community education and engagement opportunities including Music Around Town and the Troubadours. FIM Flint School of Performing Arts, one of the largest community schools of the arts in the nation, provides music, dance & theatre instruction, and performance opportunities for students of all ages and abilities.
FIM operates five performance venues, four situated on the Flint Cultural Center Campus— Whiting Auditorium, Elgood Theatre, Bower Theatre, MacArthur Recital Hall. Its fifth venue is the recently renovated, historic Capitol Theatre in downtown Flint. FIM venues host its own artistic productions, hundreds of student recitals, community rentals, and touring presentations from all over the world.
FIM Flint School of Performing Arts – This is the largest community school of the arts in Michigan and one of the most comprehensive performing arts instructional programs in the country. It has helped students of all ages discover a world of music, dance and theatre in state-of-the-art venues.
FIM Flint Symphony Orchestra – With a 105-year-history, FSO is one of the finest orchestras of its size in the nation and features guest artists from across the country and world in its annual classical concert series. It has been performing under the baton of Enrique Diemecke, music director and conductor for 34 years, one of the longest tenures for a music director in the country.
FIM Flint Repertory Theatre – This professional, not-for-profit theater attracts some of the top repertory and Broadway actors in the country. Its commitment is to provide the city of Flint and surrounding communities with highly imaginative, thought-provoking theatre that is challenging, entertaining and inspiring for all ages. Established in 2018, Flint Repertory Theatre productions have received national critical acclaim and numerous awards.
FIM Whiting Auditorium – Each year, the Whiting Presents series showcases Broadway, music, comedy, theatre and dance throughout its season. Built in 1967, the 2,043-seat theater is home to the Flint Symphony Orchestra, Annual Holiday Pops and many community graduations, recitals and other events.
FIM Capitol Theatre – Programming at the recently restored Capitol Theatre includes a diverse mix of popular music, comedy acts, film screenings, community programs and special events. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Michigan since 1985.
