Interested parties are strongly encouraged to contact the Community Foundation of Greater Flint (CFGF) to discuss their organization projects or needs prior to applying for a grant. Staff is available to provide further details on the competitive grantmaking process and provide the information needed to submit a proposal.
To be eligible for a grant, your organization must: be recognized as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization under the Internal Revenue Service Code; have direct relevance to the residents of Genesee County; provide evidence of non-discrimination in hiring and services practices.
The Community Foundation of Greater Flint does not fund competitive grant requests for: the benefit of specific individuals; sectarian religious purposes or any religious activities; or loans, debt reduction, annual appeals or political campaigns. Further, reporting requirements for prior grant awards must be fulfilled before applying for an additional grant.
The foundation continuously accepts grant proposals for competitive funding consideration. Specific application deadlines may be announced for particular funds or through a Request for Proposals process. If expedited review of grant application is needed, please explain circumstances in a cover letter.
Grant applications will be evaluated, in part, on the following:
- Staff/organizational capacity to complete the project
- Evidence of sound fiscal policy and responsible financial management
- Composition of Board of Directors and staff that reflects the organization’s constituencies
- Commitment to be/become a learning organization, i.e., willingness to capture lessons learned and modify programs accordingly
- Evidence of collaboration and cooperation with other organizations where appropriate
- Understanding of and ability to describe the relationship between the proposed project and other services and service providers within the community
- A base of community and organizational financial and program support
- Applicants that align with stated Foundation priorities and/or stated purpose of Field of Interest Funds
- Applicants that most likely will have the greatest impact on the needs and well-being of the community
- Program staff of the Community Foundation may ask to meet with representatives of the applicant organization.
- Foundation staff, and where appropriate advisory screening committee members, carefully review all applications. The Board of Trustees makes all final funding decisions.
- The Foundation generally makes one-time grant commitments. Longer-term commitments may be considered for initiatives that show exceptional promise for community impact.
- The Foundation is especially interested in innovative programs that are responsive to community needs, involve partnerships and generate collaborative efforts.
