LOCAL YOUTH ATTEND 2010 YOUTH PHILANTHROPY
AND SERVICE CAMP
FLINT, MI They came to learn, have fun and share ideas on new and innovative ways to increase the impact of youth philanthropy and service learning in their hometowns across the nation. More than 400 students from small towns and big cities across Michigan and five other states made their way to the 2010 Youth Philanthropy and Service Camp in East Lansing. The agenda was packed with sessions on topics such as proactive grantmaking, needs assessment, hunger and homelessness, networking and developing new projects that could be replicated in the participants’ communities.
Members of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint’s (CFGF) Youth Advisory Committees attended the camp held at Michigan State University.
“The conference was a great learning experience,” said Kelsey Maxwell, a senior at Grand Blanc High School and chair of the Countywide and Grand Blanc Youth Advisory Committees (YACs). “Meeting others involved in what I am passionate about was the best part of the conference.”
Harry Light of Fenton, a senior at Linden High School and chair of the South Lakes YAC, said, “The conference is a life-changing experience that turns mildly interested youth into full-fledged grantmakers.”
Attending the conference from the CFGF Countywide YAC were vice chair Rachel Sherwin, Rhonda Clarke and Phillip Walker II. Representing the South Lakes YAC were Light, vice chair Katie Handley, Chelsea Jordan, and Lyn McLeod. Clio YAC chair Trevor Hodges and vice chair Angelica Clark also attended. Maxwell attended on behalf of the Grand Blanc YAC along with vice chair Meghan Tipsword.
Acting as adult supporters for the young people were Brian Bates, program assistant, and Lynn Larkin, senior program officer at CFGF.
This year marked the first time that the Michigan Community Foundations’ Youth Project (MCFYP) and their affiliated YACs combined their annual Youth Grantmakers Summer Leadership Conference with the Michigan LEAGUE powered by Learning to Give and Learn and Serve. This opened the camp doors to students participating in Service Learning programs through their respective high schools.
“I was really impressed to see so many young people excited about philanthropy,” said Bates, adding that the YACs accept grant applications for programs and services that benefit youth in Genesee County.
